About the silhouette

The Ball Gown

A ball gown pairs a fitted bodice with a full skirt: the classic bridal shape, and still the most dramatic way to walk down the aisle. Our Costa Mesa salon carries 165 designer ball gowns to try on, from Justin Alexander, Watters, Demetrios and more, in sample sizes 6 to 28.

Most are priced $2,000 to $4,000. Below is a short guide to choosing yours: lace or satin, corset or structured bodice, sleeves or strapless, and how a ball gown compares with an A-line. Book a free appointment to try them on.

The guide

Choosing Your Ball Gown

Lace

Lace softens all that volume. Look for lace that travels from the bodice into the skirt, or appliqués scattered over tulle for a lighter, romantic finish. We have 48 lace ball gowns in the salon right now. See all lace wedding dresses.

Satin and mikado

Satin and mikado hold their shape, which is why they make the cleanest, most sculpted ball gowns. Mikado is a heavier, structured fabric with a soft sheen, made for a formal venue and a minimal look. In the salon: 28 satin and 25 mikado ball gowns. See all satin wedding dresses.

Tulle

Layered tulle gives the fullest skirt for the least weight, which makes it the easiest ball gown to dance in. Sparkle tulle adds shimmer without beading. We carry 45 tulle ball gowns. See all tulle wedding dresses.

Corset or structured bodice

A corset back laces to your shape, so the fit adjusts and the waist looks defined against the skirt. A structured bodice gives the same lift with boning and no lacing. In the salon, 39 ball gowns have a corset and 35 a structured bodice. See all corset wedding dresses.

Sleeves and necklines

Strapless and sweetheart necklines are the classic pairing for a ball gown (69 and 53 in the salon) and keep the focus on the waist. For more coverage, look at off-the-shoulder styles (19), long sleeves (8) or detachable sleeves (4) you can remove for the reception. See all long sleeve wedding dresses.

Princess ball gowns

If you want the fullest skirt in the room, ask for a princess ball gown: more layers, more volume, often a sweep of tulle or organza. See our princess wedding dresses.

Questions About Ball Gown Wedding Dresses

How much does a ball gown wedding dress cost?

At Mon Amie, most ball gowns are $2,000 to $4,000, and the full range runs from $1,500 to $8,000 and up. The price is for the gown; alterations are priced separately once you have chosen your dress.

Which body types suit a ball gown?

A ball gown defines the waist and lets the skirt balance the hips, so it flatters many figures, including pear and hourglass shapes. If you are petite, a softer tulle skirt keeps the volume from overwhelming you. The best test is trying one on, and your stylist will tell you honestly what works.

Are ball gowns heavy to wear?

It depends on the fabric. Satin and mikado ball gowns have more weight and structure, while tulle gives the same fullness for far less weight. Ask your stylist to pull one of each so you can feel the difference.

Do you have plus size ball gowns?

Yes. Our samples run from size 6 to size 28, so you can try ball gowns close to your own size. See our plus size wedding dresses.

Can a ball gown have sleeves?

Yes. Choose an off-the-shoulder neckline, long sleeves, or detachable sleeves you can take off for the reception. Right now we have 8 ball gowns with long sleeves and 4 with detachable sleeves.
